Tropical hibiscus is one of those plants that just make you go “WOW!” It is not only stunning and well known, but a fun and interesting plant to learn how to garden with. We are here to give you some of our best information on growing and caring for tropical hibiscus!
This plant originated in a tropical climate and does not tolerate freezing temperatures very well. These are the same hibiscus that we associate with Hawaii, and the variety that are strung into traditional Hawaiian leis. Tropical hibiscus show their beauty in a variety of styles and colors. You can get their brightly-colored blooms in red, orange, yellow, pink, and white as well as any mix in between. They are commonly found in their bush state, however, we also sell a topiary-style braided hibiscus that are perfect if you are trying to make a statement on your porch or patio.
BLOOMING & PRUNING
In Hampton Roads, this plant has a very long blooming season and can last from spring through late fall. Sadly, each flower only lasts one day - but these beauties produce many flowers at such a fast rate, you'll enjoy a stunning show of color every day! Because of this frequent blooming cycle, however, you will want to keep your plant clean by picking off any expired blooms.
PRO-TIP: Hibiscus buds are very sensitive and if your plant is under stress from too much or too little water, fertilizer, or other factors, the buds may fall. Also, some varieties are more prone to bud drop. Keep your plants watered and in the appropriate light to reduce stress-dropping.
WATERING
Because tropical hibiscus are from a tropical climate, they love humidity, warmth, and lots of water. During the warmer months in Hampton Roads, you will want to water these beauties almost every day. But before you water, check the plant for wilt and any other signs that it is dry. Checking the soil with your finger is the best way to do this as too much water is just as bad as not enough. This is why good drainage is extremely important for these plants. Make sure your hibiscus has a well draining potting soil as well as a hole at the bottom of the pot they are in.
LIGHT
This hibiscus, like most blooming plants, needs direct sunlight to be able to have enough energy to produce the giant blooms that we enjoy so much. However, be careful with aggressively sunny spots as that can cause foliage and bloom burn in some cases. Keep your hibiscus in a shady spot during the heat of the day to avoid burns and help blooms grow bigger and better.
