Great gardens start from the ground up, with soil being the most important component to achieving success. To build healthy soil in your garden, McDonald Garden Center recommends adding perlite, soil builder, Greenleaf fertilizer and root stimulator to the garden soil in Hampton Roads when planting. This mix specifically addresses the soil issues in our region as Virginia soil tends to be heavy and full of clay.
By adding soil amendments you can improve the soil and therefore the plants. Giving your garden the best foundation will make it healthier, more beautiful and less difficult to maintain later on. Before you plant, however, bring in a sample of your existing soil for a free analysis. A McDonald Garden Center Green Team member will test the ph level of your soil and make recommendations on adjusting the level for the specific plants you wish to install. You can also get planting recommendations based on the soil you have.
